April 2024

The Geneseo-Atkinson Food Pantry is open: Mondays 9:00 am to 7:00 pm; Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; and Fridays 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Food is distributed, and donations are gratefully accepted during business hours. We also have collection boxes in the vestibule at Fareway, NOSH and at Inspire Continuing Care for donations.

Because of the community’s generous support, the Food Pantry provided food and assistance to 239 households in February.  Combined food distributions in February were equivalent to 7,909 meals. Thanks to the many donors who make all this possible!

Dietitians from Hammond-Henry Hospital taught a free healthy cooking class on March 5 in the Matthew 25 Center at the Food Pantry. Guests were provided with recipes for lower cost healthy dishes, a cooking demonstration, and free samples of healthy food. The Dietitians will be back to teach another healthy cooking class on April 9, 1:00, and the public is invited.

On April 1, at 9:00 to 12:00 Freedom House will provide information about victim services at the Food Pantry.

A representative from River Bend will be at the Food Pantry to help guests sign up for SNAP and answer questions about SNAP on Thursday, April 4, 9:00 to 12:00.

The Food Pantry partners with Unity Point to provide two Foot Care Clinics to the public each month. Nurses soak feet, trim and file toenails, help with ingrown toenails, and give a light foot massage with lotion. Please call 309-944-3165 or email geneseopantry1@gmail.com to make an appointment. Cost is $37 but Food Pantry guests are given a voucher.

Thank you to Birth to Five for providing an information session for our guests about understanding children’s behavior.

Thank you to Geneseo BSA Troops for scouting for food and collecting donations for the Food Pantry! We are also grateful to the Geneseo Girl Scouts for providing 70 baskets of ingredients for Easter dinner, as well as Easter candy baskets for children. Our guests really appreciate this gesture!

The clothing room is especially in need of all sizes of children’s clothes and toasters.

The Geneseo-Atkinson Food Pantry volunteer of the month, Sue Weinert, has been volunteering in the clothing room for one year. She sorts donations and assists guests in the clothing room. Sue has a husband, Joe, two daughters, Samantha and Annie, and a dog, Maggie. Her hobbies are gardening, golf, bridge, reading and baking. Sue said the best thing about volunteering at the food pantry is the people! She enjoyed packing school supplies, helping with Thanksgiving baskets, and shopping for a family for Christmas. Thank you for your time and hard work, Sue!
