June 2024 Newsletter
The Geneseo-Atkinson Food Pantry is open: Mondays 9:00 am to 7:00 pm; Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; and Fridays 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Food is distributed, and donations are gratefully accepted during business hours. We also have collection boxes in the vestibule at Fareway, NOSH and at Inspire Continuing Care for donations. The Food Pantry will be closed on July 4th.
Because of the community’s generous support, the Food Pantry provided food and assistance to 227 households in April. Combined food distributions in April were equivalent to 9,811 meals. Thanks to the many donors who make all this possible!
Dietitians from Hammond-Henry Hospital taught a free healthy cooking class on May 16 in the Matthew 25 Center at the Food Pantry. Guests were provided with recipes for lower cost healthy dishes, a cooking demonstration, and free samples of healthy food. Our next dietitian class will be in August.
The Food Pantry partners with Wright Foot Left and Sole Relief to provide two Foot Care Clinics to the public each month. Nurses soak feet, trim and file toenails, help with ingrown toenails, and give a light foot massage with lotion. Please call 309-944-3165 or email geneseopantry1@gmail.com to make an appointment. Cost is $37 but Food Pantry guests are given a voucher.
The Food Pantry is collecting school supplies, which will be distributed to Geneseo Schools students in need in August. Please drop off any school supply donations at the Food Pantry by August 1. If you would like a list of school supplies needed, please visit geneseofoodpantry.org or pick up a list at the Food Pantry. Let’s help ease the burden on families in need!
Our Volunteer of the Month, Karen Doy, has been volunteering at the Geneseo-Atkinson Food Pantry for two years. She assists guests in the food room and sometimes helps in the clothing room. Karen has a husband, Steve, and two sons, Nathaniel and Andy. She enjoys ice dancing, water aerobics, gardening, and scrapbooking. Karen said the best thing about volunteering at the Food Pantry is meeting and interacting with guests, who are so appreciative of what they receive. Her most memorable experience at the Food Pantry was when she was helping a new guest who was amazed she had the opportunity to select her own items. Karen talked with her the entire time she was shopping, and when she was ready to leave, she gave Karen a big hug and thanked her for the friendship and making her day. Thank you for all you do, Karen!
